Sustainability in marketing has long since become a must.

Some are already practicing sustainable marketing. Others at least make sure that marketing activities consume as few resources as possible.

Sustainability in marketing – definition

Sustainable marketing or green marketing is precisely defined by experts:

It focuses on ecological and social added value, both for the company and its customers and for society as a whole. It is therefore based on the implementation of social or environmental actions, e.g. a part of the sales price goes to an NGO working on environmental issues.

However, sustainable marketing according to this definition is not always and everywhere possible.
But more sustainability in marketing is! Because everything that reduces the CO² footprint of marketing activities is a bit more sustainable.

Sustainable marketing measures

Of course, sustainability will already be taken into account in the development of offers.

But just as the offers themselves should be sustainable, so should their marketing. So it is important to check the sustainability of all marketing activities and materials, find possible improvements or even think of completely new solutions.

There are plenty of opportunities for more sustainability in marketing:
  • Regional proximity and sustainability as selection criteria for suppliers (marketing materials)
  • Produce printed materials such as catalogs, direct mail, brochures and flyers with recycled paper
  • Replace printed materials, if possible, with digital offers/information
  • Reduce packaging as much as possible or switch to sustainable materials
  • No giveaways made of plastic, produced in Asia
  • Brand ambassadors and influencers who credibly represent sustainability
  • Storytelling on the topic of sustainability

For young target groups, sustainability in marketing is an absolute must!

Voice assistants – sustainable & accessible

Voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa can usually reproduce digitally available information very well.
Nevertheless, brochures and information boards, i.e. analog media still play a major role in marketing.
The cost of these should not be underestimated. And the prices for wood, paper and transport are going steeply upwards.

That’s why it’s time to look for alternative more sustainable media. Voice assistants offer a good solution.
Instead of multi-page brochures or a huge information board, small NFC tags do the job of sharing the information.
